GS Spotlight: Isabela Rivera

What is your dream career and what appeals to you about it?

My dream career is in the sports medicine field. As I gain more experience, I hope to narrow down the specific speciality I want to pursue. My interest in sports medicine began when I took an introductory sports medicine class in high school. I became really fascinated about anatomy and physiology, especially with sports-related injuries. This ultimately led me to major in human biology and minor in sports science. The human body functions in such intricate ways that we often overlook which is something I am fascinated in and get to see often in this field. Also, while many patients may present with similar injuries, each one will have a unique rehabilitation journey I get to be a part of.

How do you spend your free time when you are not studying?

I am involved on campus as a Goodnight outreach ambassador and mentor, along with being a C3 program ambassador and mentor. Outside of school, when I’m not studying or working, I enjoy staying active, spending time with my family and friends (and my dog Ralph), being involved in my church, and listening to true crime podcasts or audiobooks while drawing.

What does the word “community” mean to you?

Community, to me, is a feeling—one of belonging and acceptance. Growing up, I moved often, so it was hard for me to establish roots and build a community. Along with this, transferring from community college to NC State was another challenge in finding my place and community. But within the Goodnight Scholars Program, I instantly felt welcomed, encouraged, supported, and cared for. I’ve made my best friends here, and I’m incredibly grateful to be part of such an amazing community.

Can you share a bit about your family’s Latinx background and how it has shaped your identity?

My dad’s side of the family is Puerto Rican, and my grandparents were born there. The food, culture, and strong sense of family are a big and unique part of my life. We love and take care of one another, and that resilience has definitely shaped who I am. However, my Christian faith is the true source of my identity. Everything I think, say, and do is guided by my faith, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without it.
