First-Year Student Stories

GS Spotlight: Emma Rowe

1. What inspired you to choose your major or field of study?
I chose Human Biology as my major because I have always wanted to pursue medicine as my life goal. The major of human biology also offers multiple opportunities to learn more about what I plan to pursue. The anatomy and physiology classes seem like they are going to be interesting and present a good challenge. Human biology also made the most sense for me compared to the other majors offered here at NC State. There are a lot of opportunities within the College of Sciences for pre-medical students which also inspired me to choose Human Biology other majors. Overall human biology is fascinating as a subject for me and the human biology major provides me the opportunities to explore my interests within the field.

2. What’s a project or activity you’ve worked on that you’re really proud of? (can be school related or a personal project)
A project that I have worked on that I am really proud of is researching the ethical backgrounds of using CRISPR-Cas9 technology with a focus of the use of it within utero. This was a semester-long project, and I worked with a mentor at my local community college. I did this project first as a requirement to fulfill an honor requirement. However, the further I did research into the topic the more I became intrigued and enthralled with the subject matter. I wrote a research paper with the help of my mentor and included the multiple perspectives that exist around the use of CRISPR, designer babies, and gene editing within medicine. I also explored the medical ethics of the potential of using gene editing technology to eradicate diseases and disorders. This project was very extensive and I am proud of how it turned out. I learned so much because of doing this project and am so grateful for the opportunity to have the time to work on this project with my mentor.

3. What adjective would you use to best describe yourself, and why?
I would say that the one adjective that I would best use to describe myself is “Outgoing”. I always love to meet new people and get to know their stories. For me, learning about new people and forming connections comes very naturally. When I first arrived on campus this August, I didn’t know anyone, however I soon found some of my closest friends.  No one is a stranger to me, they are just a friend I haven’t met yet.

4. What advice would you give to someone applying to NC State and the Goodnight Scholars Program for the upcoming year?
Just being yourself is my biggest piece of advice for someone applying to NC State and the Goodnight Scholars Program this year. Someone offered me this same advice the night before interview day and it made everything click. The Goodnight Scholars program wants to see who you are and what you represent, they want to know your story and your personality. I would tell someone that if it is meant to happen it will. Trusting the process is an important part. College admissions was definitely a struggle for me and I would advise anyone who is going through it this year to believe that everything will work out no matter where they go.

5. What song or podcast is on repeat for you?
The one song that is on repeat for me is “You’re on Your Own Kid” by Taylor Swift. I think it is very fitting for the transition from a small town to college and Raleigh and navigating everything that comes with that.
