Mario Rosas, transfer class of 2025, is an electrical engineering major who is originally from the South American nation of Venezuela. Continue reading to learn more about his academic interests, experiences, and goals in English or in Spanish.

My name is Mario Rosas. I am an Electrical Engineering transfer student at NC State. I was born and raised in the South American nation of Venezuela. Due to the political and humanitarian crisis, in 2016 my family had to seek asylum in the United States. My academic interests are in machine learning and control systems. Currently, I am the president of the IEEE chapter of NC State. My hobbies include playing intramural soccer, and hanging out at the Goodnight lounge. I am also part of the Embedded Machine Learning, Video Game Development, Catholic Ministry and Model UN clubs. I feel fortunate to be able to pursue higher education despite the challenges that being an immigrant presents.
My academic journey began at Forsyth Tech in Winston Salem. My community college played a significant role in my ability to succeed at NC State. The excellent physics and mathematics departments prepared me for the challenge of taking Electrical Engineering courses at NC State. I am grateful for the opportunity to attend a community college and enjoy the small classes, quality instructors, flexibility, and the leadership opportunities through Student Government. Forsyth Tech gave me a second chance at education. These experiences have taught me that perseverance is an essential trait to achieve your goals. It is never too late and no matter how long it takes, pursuing my academic goals and helping my family is worthy.
You will never know unless you ask, so many times we disqualify ourselves from opportunities that are available to us. If you are not sure you will be invited to apply, self nominate. Being part of one of the largest active refugee crises, I have learned that it is pertinent to represent the goodness of the Venezuelan people and be an example to show our communities that we can prosper in higher education. I aspire to obtain a PhD in Electrical Engineering with a research focus in machine learning and become a university professor. I believe in “criticize by creating”, the best way to make a change is to be a part of developing a solution. I intend to have a fulfilling career and venture into government.
Hopefully one day I will go back to help reconstruct Venezuela as a free and prosperous nation. The Goodnight Transfer Scholars Program has been a blessing to me because it enabled me to meet incredible people. It was easy to find my support group in my fellow goodnight scholars, they have helped me be a better student and adapt to the challenges. The pro staff work hard to make sure we get the personal and professional development that aligns with our career goals. Considering the costs of out-of-state tuition, attending NC State seemed impossible to me. This scholarship made the difference in allowing me to enroll at a four year university. I appreciate the contributions of Dr. Jim and Ann Goodnight to the future of North Carolina. I want to make sure more students know about this life changing opportunity.

Mi nombre es Mario Rosas. Soy un estudiante de ingeniería eléctrica en NC State. Nací y crecí en Venezuela. A causa de la crisis política y humanitaria, en 2016 mi familia decidió pedir asilo en los Estados Unidos.
Mis intereses académicos están en el área de aprendizaje de máquinas y robótica. Actualmente, soy presidente de la sección estudiantil del Instituto de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos (por sus siglas en inglés IEEE) en NC State. Mis hobbies son jugar fútbol en un equipo interno, y pasar el tiempo en la estancia de los Goodnight Scholars. También soy parte del club de Aprendizaje de Máquinas integrado, el club de desarrollo de videojuegos, el ministerio catolico y Modelo de Naciones Unidas. Me siento afortunado de poder estudiar educación avanzada a pesar de las dificultades que presenta ser un inmigrante.
Mi trayecto académico empezó en el Forsyth Tech de Winston Salem. Mi Community College jugó un rol fundamental en mi capacidad de tener éxito en NC State. Los excelentes departamentos de física y matemática me prepararon para el desafío de tomar clases de ingeniería eléctrica en NC State.
Estoy agradecido por la oportunidad de atender un Community College y gozar de las clases pequeñas, educadores de calidad, la flexibilidad, y las oportunidades de desarrollo de liderazgo a través del centro de estudiantes. El Forsyth Tech me dio una segunda oportunidad.
Estas experiencias me han enseñado que la perseverancia es esencial para lograr las metas. Nunca es tarde y sin importar cuanto tome, perseguir mis metas académicas y ayudar a mi familia vale la pena. Ser parte de una de las más grandes crisis de refugiados, me ha ensenado que es pertinente ser un representante de la bondad de los Venezolanos y un ejemplo para mostrar a nuestras comunidades que podemos prosperar en la educación universitaria.
Aspiro obtener un doctorado en ingeniería eléctrica con un enfoque en investigación sobre el aprendizaje de máquinas y llegar a ser profesor universitario. Yo creo en “criticar creando”. La mejor manera de hacer la diferencia es siendo parte de crear una solución. Ambiciono tener una carrera gratificante y aventurarme al gobierno. Espero algún día volver a ayudar a reconstruir a Venezuela como un país libre y próspero.
El programa de Goodnight Scholars ha sido una bendición para mí porque me ha permitido conocer gente increíble. Fue fácil conseguir mi grupo de apoyo en mis compañeros de Goodnight Scholars; Ellos me han ayudado a ser un mejor estudiante y adaptarme a los desafíos. Los consejeros trabajan muy duro para que podamos tener el desarrollo personal y profesional que se alineen con nuestros objetivos.
Considerando los costes de matriculación para estudiantes foráneos, atender NC State me parecía imposible. Esta beca ha hecho la diferencia para permitirme estudiar en la universidad.
