Tell us about yourself!
I am a senior (!!) double majoring in Biological Oceanography and Natural Resources with a concentration in Marine and Coastal Environments, with minors in Naval Science and Biological Sciences. I am also president of the CrossFit Club at NC State!
Give an overview about your time studying abroad in the Bahamas.
I went to Andros Island, Bahamas for two weeks in June with a group of students led by Dr. Peterson and Dr. Langerhans from NC State. While there, we split into two groups to conduct research on blue hole ecotourism on Andros Island and gather baseline data for conservation prioritization of inland blue holes.
What was your favorite part about studying abroad?
My favorite part by far was the people I met! I went to the Bahamas several days earlier than everyone else to explore by myself. Ironically, though I went by myself I hardly spent a minute alone. Having conversations with local Bahamians allowed me to see the islands from their perspective. I also met students who I have stayed in touch with and they have become good friends!
If you had to give one piece of advice to someone studying abroad for the first time, what would it be?
Go outside of your comfort zone! There will be times you probably feel nervous or alone, but pushing past these obstacles will make your experiences that much better.
What is your biggest takeaway from this experience?
Personally, I learned that I need to make traveling more of a priority. I learned so much more than I would have in a classroom setting and made the best memories!
