Travel Opportunities for Goodnight Scholars
Fall Break: Toronto
Toronto is Canada's most populous city, and the hub of many of its industries, from the financial and business sector, to technology and green innovation, to fashion, film and tourism. Traveling to Toronto is an opportunity to experience a cosmopolitan, international city less than two hours away by plane from Raleigh. The cost of this trip is significantly subsidized.
North Carolina: Mountains to Coast
North Carolina: Mountains to Coast is an interdisciplinary service-learning trip focused on providing accessible STEM activities for middle school students in rural communities. Scholars chosen for the trip will share their enthusiasm for STEM while leading fun STEM activities connected to the 7th grade science curriculum.
Time will also be dedicated to exploring North Carolina’s unique history and natural resources through cultural excursions and outdoor activities.
Trinidad & Tobago
Trinidad & Tobago is an interdisciplinary service-learning trip focused on environmental conservation, ecotourism, and public education. Service is a major element of Trinidad & Tobago and scholars can expect to engage in a variety of hands-on, high-impact service activities that will test classroom knowledge and cultivate new personal skills. Scholars will learn from STEM professionals residing in Trinidad & Tobago about the challenges of environmental sustainability for a country in the midst of a booming industrial period and the efforts made to ensure their natural habitat is preserved. Scholars will also have the opportunity to learn about the decolonization of cocoa (chocolate) with our partners at the Alliance of Rural Communities.
Mayventure: Northern California
This trip is an opportunity for scholars to bond over shared travel experiences and unwind after an eventful academic year. Scholars will have the opportunity to first visit San Francisco, a cool, elegant, cultural and worldly seaport whose steep streets offer breathtaking views of one of the world’s greatest bays. Although most people think of the famous for grand-dame Victorians, cable cars, a dynamic waterfront, and a soaring golden bridge, this city also had cultural opportunities not found in North Carolina. Including the opportunity to learn more about the culture, history and activism of the LGBTQIA and Chinese communities in San Francisco. Then we will transition from the bustling city to one of the United State’s most beautiful and well known national parks, Yosemite.
